Johan started violin and piano at an early age and studied with Zanta Hofmeyr (violin) and Prof. Walter Mony (violin and orchestral conducting). At age 16 he was a member of the National Youth Orchestra of South Africa and subsequently performed with the visiting Le Solistes de Paris in 1998.
He also made his conducting debut two years later with the Johannesburg Symphony Orchestra. In 2001 the University of Pretoria awarded him a scholarship to study composition with Alexander Johnson and violin with Prof. Zanta Hofmeyr, and that same year he appeared in Unisa’s Musicus journal. He also studied with Chris Walton, Chats Devroop, Wim Viljoen, Meki Nziwe and John Coultier (harpsichord and early music performance practice) and formed part of the period ensemble Bandi di Giovanni.
Since 2008 he has pursued a career in composition and music technology scoring for film projects that include The International 48-Hour film festival (Johannesburg & Los Angeles) and International Horror Film Festival (Cape Town) in 2011. He is the founder of Southern House Production, a company that specialises in subliminal audio, music for film, television and the internet, and sound stock libraries for various media platforms. In 2012 Johan founded LoudSchool, a group that specializes in music education through the internet that include Audio Mixing and Production, Song Writing, Scoring for Film and Media, and Music Theory.
From 2005-2013 Johan also toured as session violinist/fiddler for various groups and appeared on stages from Huisgenoot Skouspel, Splashy Fen, Carnival City, Emperors Palace, Loftus, Lisotoland, Sun City, ABSA Stadium to Weskus Lagoon Fesitval, KKNK, InnibosFees, Jacaranda Carols by Candle Light, and shared the stage with artists such as Jakkie Louw, Steve Hofmeyr, Themba Mkize, Sello Galane and Eagle Eye Cherry.
Johan still teaches violin and specializes in both classic and contemporary avant garde styles as well as blues, bluegrass, progressive rock and metal. He is currently filming a wide ranging violin syllabus for LoudSchool to be released in 2013.
